NEXICON 2011

NEXICON PORTAL

2011 Playa installation

Nexicon Portal is a system of three curved, tapered trusses in a tripod configuration terminating at the top (25'high)
with a shiny 30" diameter sphere that is constantly rotating in all directions within a 3 axis motorized gimbal mount.
On the surface of the sphere are mounted thirty 1 watt blue lasers that each are equipped with individual diffraction gratings
that break each of their beams into many hundreds of smaller beams
that are reduced in power to a level that is eye-safe for people on the ground **.

By day it is a beautiful moving scuplture in and of itself; by night its lasers come on to paint an astounding moving carpet of blue light on the ground below
Because the laser sphere is contained inside of three concentric, rotating rings, it moves in a graceful dance and projects it's beams on the ground to create a dynamic sea of motion that can be compared to how a large school of fish or a big flock of small birds might move... gracefully, almost randomly, amazingly.
